A Liberal Democrat Councillor has called on planners to make sure new homes are installed with the latest phone and computer technology.

Edd Stonham, who represents Histon and Impington on South Cambridgeshire District Council, said the action is vital to prevent a repeat of the "obsolete technology" being used by residents of Orchard Park.

He said he is amazed that when computer cables and telephone connections were installed on Orchard Park - which is in his ward - no-one worried about the level of service that would be provided for residents.

"Residents on a brand new development are living with technology which is frankly obsolete," he said.

David Jenkins, Lib Dem county councillor, has supported Edd's call for action.

He said: "This came to my attention last week when I was told how it is almost impossible to run a business from home because of the very poor broadband service.

"We will do what we can to improve this but we must also make sure that it doesn't happen for all the other new developments which are planned."
